  • Village Record on November 9, 1825 — News — Character In almost every town and village of any considerable size, there ever and anon appears an odd character – some queer old fellow, the sport of boys, the but for every one to pass his joke upon- one that the dogs bark at but won’t bite – half wit – half idiot – without wisdom or forecast to live very comfortably, but with wit enough to live, as he does live, without work – such an one as a stranger would ask – is that?’- and those who know, every now and then say of him, , he is an old fish.’Such a one have we had in West Chester; and as the present week marks an interesting era in his history – as his character belongs to the public, we have thought it proper, for the information of those who come after us, to place it upon record. Mr. THOMAS BUG – known by the name of Tom Bug, is one of those personages whose portraiture we have just been sketching, and are about to sketch. Whether born in Guinea or Maryland, is not known to us; but he is understood to be the slave of the Ridgely family. Tom is jet black, and has that cast of features that is not calculated to add to the idea of beauty in his race; but he is a stout, well-made fellow; a little bow-kneed, but strong, and in his younger days may have been active.- How he came to wander to West Chester, we are not informed, but for several years he has spent the summer with us, returning in winter to the south to his master kitchen, like birds of passage; and like birds too he brings music on his coming. Tom is generally seen fantastically dressed, a red string round his hat, with an old feather in it, red garters and an old rusty sword in his hand. – On parade days, considerable additions are made to his finery, and he walks at a respectable distance with all the pomp of the most warlike stride. On merry-making evenings, Tom gets his old fiddle and parades the streets as long as there is rosin on his bow or whiskey in his head, to keep up a tune; and the chief difficulty in such cases is that he does know when to stop…Tom too is an orator. Bid him deliver an oration, and if cheered to the performance by the hope of his favorite beverage, he will draw himself up to the highest point of dignity, assume a look of imposing consequence, extend his arm, and speak for a full quarter of an hour, with great volubility and emphasis, and the hearer stands astonished that any one can repeat so many words without expressing the shadow of an idea. The peculiar laugh of Tom will long be remembered; there was more wit and significance in his expressive chuckle than any thing else about him…A gentleman told us yesterday that he met the old fellow on his way westward, dressed as usual, …a drawn sword in one hand, and a bottle of whiskey in the other…
